  • Jacobsen Seriously Injured in Bike Accident

    It’s been a while since my last post, but luckily this time of the season is slower than molasses for all thing nordic so there hasn’t been anything of substance to report. Today however, there was some bad news out of Norway as 22 year old Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen was in a serious bike accident while training in Sjusjøen in which she broke her jaw, elbow, and back. No more details have been released as yet but NRK has reported that there will be an official press release on Monday.

    After being out injured all of last year with a bad achilles injury, the bad run of injuries continues for Jacobsen and this accident will definitely bring her season to an end almost before it even started. Hopefully, she’ll have a great recovery and be back to the ski grind sooner than later.

    Before today, there has been some other notable news including the German ski federation hiring Tor Arne Hetland as the “external adviser” to sprinters Josef Wenzl and Daniel Heun. Initial reports had Norway wanting Hetland for their own sprint team but Hetland decided to “broaden his horizon” and opted for the German team instead.

    The German sprint team is a fraction of it’s distant counterparts with no skiers finishing in the top 22 of the sprint overall while Norway had 7 in the top 13 and 4 of the top 5. It’ll be great experience for Hetland as his transition away from the athlete lifestyle to a more coaching oriented position in the ski world. I would not be surprised at all if he ended up back in Norway as one of the coaches there somewhere down the road.

    A great interview with Alex Harvey from Fasterskier a while back which touches on plans for the Olympic year, the media attention after his great year on the circuit and how he’s fitting into his home away from home in Canmore. Points out that Inge could be the missing piece of the puzzle. He has the ability to brings people together, which is “supper good for team spirits”.

    In other news, the FIS has proposed rules changes with regards to the B-final for the sprints. The FIS intend to skip the B-final to allow more airtime after the A-final is run for “emotions and interviews”. This a good move for the average spectator as it’ll give them a better look at the reactions of athletes after the races but in terms of points. However, I imagine a lot of athletes will draw strong opposition to the proposal. Even though the B-final is only for 7th to 12th place, there are still some crucial points up for grabs that could change the looks of the season and if the B-final was thrown out then how would the 7th to 12th places be ranked; by their semi-final time or by their qualification time?

    That’s all the notable news the last little while. All the best in the mountains and on the trails this summer.

    Til Next Time.

Last weekend the senior team was in race mode !! Marty, Chad, and I raced in the Thursday night span class=”blsp-spelling-error” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_0″GVCC/span bike race. Since Chad and I knew we were racing the next two days we talked about sitting in the pack and then trying to make something happen in the uphill sprint finish. But as usual we were not able to sit in the pack and worked to push the pace the entire race. A three man break got away and chad and I lead the group to try to catch them. We were unable to catch them but were able to put the pack in a world of hurt that lead to me being able to win the field sprint and taking 4span class=”blsp-spelling-error” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_1″th/span overall. Chad got a calf cramp on the last lap and was span class=”blsp-spelling-corrected” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_2″relegated/span to soft peddle to the finish. On Friday night we all raced in the festival on the green 5k in span class=”blsp-spelling-error” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_3″Honeoye/span Falls. I really wanted to do this race because I had won it last year and it would be a good benchmark to measure my fitness. The raced started out span class=”blsp-spelling-corrected” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_4″slowly/span and at 2 miles I was with the leaders I did not catch the mile mark on the way out but at 2 miles I was at 11:35 and knew I needed to make a move because if it came down to a sprint I would be toast. I was able to step on it pretty good and ended up winning by about 20 seconds (17:18) . I was happy with my time after doing the bike race the night before. • Treadmill Testing

    div style=”text-align: left;”Near the end of last week we did a similar test to the double pole machine on the treadmill. Scott found a treadmill at Pete Dickenson’s Winthrop Physical Therapy that would rise to a 15-20% grade. The goal was to find our lactate threshold while ski walking/ski bounding  on an uphill grade. Results and test strategy were very similar to the double pole machine lactate threshold test we did in Scott’s gym. This test was a little more focused on our threshold using more muscles (as opposed to upper body strength). Results were good and will be very useful for our summer training!br //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjtxjTBXI/AAAAAAAAAE0/Jzf3BRwUE7c/s1600-h/IMG_1115.JPG”img src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjtxjTBXI/AAAAAAAAAE0/Jzf3BRwUE7c/s320/IMG_1115.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351793370246350194″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 180px; ” //adiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size:large;”Testing Materials/spanbr //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjLkV9YpI/AAAAAAAAAEk/Kkq2zjalzSM/s1600-h/DSC00891.JPG”img src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjLkV9YpI/AAAAAAAAAEk/Kkq2zjalzSM/s320/DSC00891.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351792782585193106″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; ” //adiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size:large;”All Out- Sadie’s heal  /spanbr //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVkBk4B1GI/AAAAAAAAAE8/slO5h2g-S4w/s1600-h/IMG_1119.JPG”img src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVkBk4B1GI/AAAAAAAAAE8/slO5h2g-S4w/s320/IMG_1119.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351793710441026658″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 180px; ” //adiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size:large;”Sam Naney/spanbr //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjbI2Y5YI/AAAAAAAAAEs/bHWjlBsFt2Q/s1600-h/IMG_1109.JPG”img src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVjbI2Y5YI/AAAAAAAAAEs/bHWjlBsFt2Q/s320/IMG_1109.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351793050082928002″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 180px; height: 320px; ” //adiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size:large;”Jaime Bronga/spanbr //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVkQKEKkmI/AAAAAAAAAFE/q3WiPI2km2g/s1600-h/IMG_1130.JPG”img src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SkVkQKEKkmI/AAAAAAAAAFE/q3WiPI2km2g/s320/IMG_1130.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351793960942211682″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 180px; ” //adiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size:large;”Erik Bjornsen/spanbr //divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2910103639238326543-5382695810877551582?l=methowolympicdevelopment.blogspot.com’//div

  • Off and Running

    Today I went for my first run since tearing my Achilles tendon in March. Actually, it was my first run since November. It was the most pathetic run ever – twenty minutes on a track at a 15 minute mile pace – but it was a big step in my rehabilitation. The biggest revelation for me during my injury layoff has been how much I love running.

  • Killing Butterflies

    Butterflies are actually kind of big. When you hit many of them at 35-40mph descending on a bike they hurt a little. Not a bad kind of hurt, but I wouldn’t want to take one in the face.
